Adhesives For Man-made Boards
In contrast to solid wood boards, Man-made Boards are made of wood chips, wood blocks, wood veneers, wood fibers or grass fibers. In the production of man-made boards, adhesives should be used to hold the raw materials together under heat and pressure .
Common types of man-made boards are plywood, OSB, blockboard, chipboard, fibreboard, hardboard, finger joint board, laminated veneer lumber.
What adhesives are used in man-made boards ?
1. Urea Formaldehyde (UF), is thermosetting resin made from urea and formaldehyde. UF glue is Moisture Resistant (MR) grade. UF adhesive is used for all man-made panels.
2. Phenol Formaldehyde (PF) or Phenol Resorcinol Formaldehyde (PRF) , is thermosetting resin made from phenols and formaldehyde. PF glue is Weather and Boil Proof (WBP) grade. PF glue is used for man-made panels which should have better moisture/water proof property, such as marine plywood, exterior plywood, OSB/3, LVL …
3. Melamine Formaldehyde (MF) or Melamine resin, Melamine-Urea-Formaldehyde (MUF), is thermosetting resin made from melamine and formaldehyde. MF glue is WBP grade. Usually, people think MF glue is low quality WBP glue. But actually, the best MF glue is as good as PF glue. MF glue is also used for man-made boards which should have better moisture/water proof property.
4. CARB, E0, E1, E2 glue ? (Low Formaldehyde Emission Glue)
CARB, E0, E1, E2 are not glue names . CARB, E0, E1, E2 are formaldehyde emissions ratings for man-made boards . If a buyer required E0 glue, he is requiring the finished boards should meet the technical requirement defined in E0 grade. Low formaldehyde emission glues are used for interior man-made boards to reduce indoor air pollution.
I an Myanmar now. I attend to set up bamboo block or flooring factoty. It will be medium project.
So can you advice whether Mr Glue or WBP Adhesive should be used.
